Nightmare Treatment

Nightmares are common in adulthood but not something we often talk about. They can occur periodically or more frequently during times of stress. It is also common for nightmares to occur following a traumatic event and to become very bothersome, upsetting, and cause great sleep disruption. For some, nightmares have been present since they can remember, and they are ready for a change and ultimately more restful sleep.

For adults, nightmare treatment is often recommended when nightmares occur frequently and/or the nightmares are causing distress, avoidance of sleep, or interfere with daytime functioning.

Nightmare treatment can include:

  • An assessment of causal factors (e.g., sleep habits/patterns, stress, life events, medications)

  • Psychoeducation about sleep & nightmares

  • Improving sleep habits

  • Imagery Researal Therapy (IRT)

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Trauma-focused treatments

  • Relaxation & stress management strategies

  • Addressing co-occurring conditions

  • Medication review
